12.30.2008 Orbitel to drop Univision, Telefutura & Galavision

December 30, 2008 - Maricopa, AZ:  Orbitel confirmed today that it will drop KTVW (Ch 13) Univision, KFPH (Ch 99) Telefutura and Galavision (Ch 57) from its cable system effective January 1, 2009.  Orbitel informed its customers at the beginning of December that these services may be dropped if the company and the broadcaster were unable to reach an agreement for continued carriage after the end of 2008.  "We have worked very hard to negotiate a renewed carriage for these services," said Keith Kirkman, President of Orbitel.  "Unfortunately the parent company, Univision Television Group, is asking for license fees that would dramatically increase the monthly cable charges for all Orbitel customers.  We cannot expect all of our customers to pay these types of fees for these services."  Every three years cable operators are required to renegotiate carriage of all local broadcast TV stations.  Orbitel has successfully negotiated carriage for all other local broadcast signals (ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, CW, PBS and others) carried on the system but the company was not able to reach a favorable arrangement with Univision for these stations.  "We regret the loss of this programming but during these difficult economic times, we cannot expect our customers to pay outrageous fees for programming of limited interest" added Kirkman.
